The session was at 2 pm, and at 1:58 you were looking for a shirt.
You booked it on Sunday, when it felt like the answer: a stranger, a camera, both of you working. By Tuesday at 1:58 the booking is a task, the camera is a face, the time is a wall, and you are hunting for a clean collar instead of opening the document. If you have ADHD you have done this, and you may have decided body doubling is not for you. It is. You were at the wrong end of the line.
Body doubling has two ends
Body doubling is doing a task while another person is present, and the person does nothing about your task.
The largest study so far is a 2024 survey of 220 neurodivergent people, mostly with ADHD, by Eagle, Baltaxe-Admony and Ringland (ACM Transactions on Accessible Computing). Most had found body doubling on their own before they heard the word. The authors map it on two lines. One runs from same time, same place to different time, different place. The other, they call it mutuality, runs from quiet company, where the other person barely notices you, to accountability, where they check on you. Both ends help different people. A survey is not a trial, so we say easier, never works. The whole picture of body doubling is here.
Every body double you can borrow or book sits somewhere on the second line. Where it sits decides whether it starts you or becomes one more thing you did not do.
Focusmate sits at the accountability end
Focusmate is scheduled video sessions with a stranger, camera on, at a booked time.
That is the accountability end, and for the people who need it, it is very good. A stranger who can see you is a reason to sit down. A booked time is a deadline, and an ADHD brain starts when time is almost up. If you need to be seen to start, Focusmate is built for exactly you, and this page is not trying to talk you out of it. Book the session.
Its cost for this brain is the three things it is made of. A booking is a task, and a task is what you cannot start; the session you meant to book on Tuesday is the one you did not book. A set time is a wall, the day bends around 2 pm, and 2 pm is when the shirt goes missing. A face is a face, and for some people being watched is the wrong end of the line. If being watched makes you hide, you are not failing at body doubling. You want the other end.
The other end: company without watching
At the quiet end, someone is there and nobody is checking.
A friend on the sofa with her own laptop. A cafe. A recorded "study with me" video with a stranger at a desk. Nobody books it, nobody sees your screen, nobody asks how it went. The person is there, the minute is shared, and the task starts.
An ADHD brain does not start on importance. It starts on interest, novelty, challenge or urgency, in a clinical model the psychiatrist William Dodson built from decades of patients, not a trial. Company is not on his list, and every ADHD forum added it anyway, because it does what the four do: it makes now different from later without asking the task to change. The quiet end does it with the smallest dose there is. Nobody is watching. Someone is there. The four levers, and this fifth one, are here.
How to find the quiet end today
Pick the mildest version you can get today, and use it on the task waiting longest.
- A friend on a call, both on mute. Cameras on if you like, mics off, both working. Say what you are doing at the start and at the end, nothing in between.
- A room with other people working. A library, a cafe, a shared desk. You are not there to talk. You are there to be near.
- A "study with me" video. A recorded person at a desk. Same time and same place are not required; the survey's first line is the point.
- A body double on your screen. For the days when none of the above is possible, which for most of us is most days.
Stop any of them the moment it makes you feel watched. Watched is the other end, and it is not yours.
How Kaapi does it
Timi is the quiet end, at the size a screen allows.
Timi is a small pebble at the bottom right of your Mac while Kaapi runs. Every five minutes by default, settable anywhere from five to sixty, Timi says one line about a real task on your list: Have you done "Send the invoice"? or Want to sit with "Call the dentist"? I'm here. Click the line and a card offers Start focus. Say "Not now" and Timi asks "By when?", and the task takes the time you pick.
Three rules keep it company and not supervision, and they are ours. Timi never sends an OS banner; the only banner Kaapi ever sends is a routine at its time. Timi stays quiet while you are looking at the list, and whenever monitoring is paused. And nothing is counted back at you; Timi never says how many lines you left unanswered.
During a focus session the nudges stop, and a check-in takes their place every five minutes, in three voices: Still on "Send the invoice"?, then You have "Send the invoice". I have my book., then Quiet in here. Good quiet. Nobody is watching your screen. Something is in the room.
It is not a person and does not pretend to be one. There is no booking, no camera and no slot to miss. If the booked kind gets you started, book it. If the booking is the thing you cannot start, this is the other end. Kaapi is $9.99 a month or $99 a year, plus tax; you try the whole loop first, then you pay.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Focusmate alternative for ADHD?
It depends on which end of body doubling you need. For accountability without a booking, a friend on a muted video call. For quiet company, a cafe, a "study with me" video, or a body double on your screen. In Kaapi, Timi says one line about a real task every five minutes and never sends a banner.
Does body doubling help if nobody is watching me?
For many people, yes. In a 2024 survey of 220 neurodivergent people, body doubling ran from quiet company to being checked on, and both ends helped different people. Watching is one end, not the definition. If being seen makes you hide, try the quiet end: a person, or a presence, with no report due.
Why can I not start a Focusmate session I booked?
Because the booking became a task, and starting a task is the hard part for an ADHD brain. A set time is a wall the day bends around, and a face is a reason to find a clean shirt first. You are not failing at body doubling. You may need the end with no booking and no camera.
Can an app be a body double?
Partly. An app can do the smallest thing a person on the sofa does: be visibly there and say the task's name. It cannot share a minute the way a person can. Timi sits at the bottom right of your Mac, speaks one line about a real task every five to sixty minutes, and swaps to a quiet check-in during a focus session.
